What is this course about?
This is a two year course concerned with all aspects of Science. You will complete a range of activities including practical experiments, research activities and written projects to extend your knowledge of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will study a range of core and optional units over two years. This course will extend your scientific knowledge and is an excellent foundation for many different career pathways.
What you will study?
You will study the following units:
Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Science
Unit 2 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
Unit 3 – Scientific Investigation Techniques
In addition, you will study one additional unit such as:
- Human Body Systems
- Disease and Infection
- Astronomy and Space Studies
How you will be assessed?
There are two externally assessed units:
Principles and Applications of Science
Three 40 minute examinations worth a total of 90 credits.
Science Investigation Techniques
A controlled assessment which is set and marked by the exam board. Students undertake a 3 hour practical examination followed by a 1 hour 30 minute experiment worth a total of 120 credits.
Examinations take place in January and May. Each examination may be retaken once and the higher grade will always count.
Practical Scientific Procedures & Techniques
A 90 credit coursework unit, which is internally assessed and verified.
And one optional unit of Biology,Chemistry or Physics
Chosen as a class. A 60 credit coursework unit which is internally assessed and verified
What will it prepare you for?
When taken alongside other L3 BTEC or A level qualifications, this course can help you to progress onto higher education or into an apprenticeship or employment in the science, technology, engineering, maths or health care sector.
There are many relevant science degree courses including Psychology, Engineering, Animal Behaviour, Criminology, Sport and Health Studies.
In addition students will be fully prepared to undertake apprenticeships in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths sectors as well as Health and Sport sectors.
Subject entry requirements:
- GCSE grade 5 or above in mathematics and English.
- GCSE grade C or above in Science.
- A keen interest in Science and how it affects the world.
